How to install Windows 10 on USB stick

In this article I will describe in detail how Windows 10 is installed on the USB lever. In fact, the instructions are also suitable if the installation is made by the DVD disc.

Creation of the deployable USB stick

The first step: it is the creation of the departible USB stick (or the DVD disk) with installation files for Windows 10. If you have a license for the operating system, the best method to perform the Startable USB stick, the use of the Microsoft official usefulness, available on the installation system must correspond to the current Biti operating system (32 or 64). You may be interested in how Windows 10 ISO discharge from the Microsoft website.

After performing the usefulness, select the «Create media installation media for another PC» (create the installation environment for another PC), then select the language and version of Windows 10 (if you have a license for the domestic version, you will not be possible to install the Pro version, it will not be activated.). Then select «USB Flash Drive» and wait for the completion and registration of the Windows 10 installation files on USB stick. With the help of this utility you can download the ISO image for writing on a DVD. By default, the usefulness offers the download of that version and the Windows 10 editions (it will be a field with recommended settings), for which it is possible to update (taking into account the current operating system).

Note: If previously the usefulness offered the choice of Windows 10 Pro or Home separately, only Windows 10 is displayed and the choice of the version takes place during the installation of the system.

In the event that you already have an ISO image with Windows 10, it is possible to create an initial USB stick. More information in the article as I start USB with Windows 10.

Preparation for installation

Before starting the installation, save all important data (included from the desktop). I recommend saving them on an external storage unit, separate hard drive or «disc d» – a separate partition on the hard drive.

And the next step, before starting: set the boot from the USB stick or the disc. To do this, restart the computer (restart even better, because the fast start (fast start) can prevent the desired functions) and:

  • Or enter the BIOS (UEFI) and set the USB levetta first in the list of loading supports. Entrance into the BIOS is usually performed by pressing the (on fixed computers) or F2 (on the laptop) button before loading the operating system. Further information: as I set in Bios for the first option for the start from the USB stick.
  • Or you can use the start menu: a special menu, from which you can choose which unit will be loaded from right now.

After uploading the distribution of Windows 10, you will see the message «Press any key for starting from CDD» on a black screen. Press any key and is waiting for the installation program to start.

The next window: the «immediate installation» button, which must be pressed, as well as the «computer repair» point in the lower part of the window, which will not be analyzed in this article, although in some cases it is useful.

In the next window you will be asked to insert the product key to activate Windows 10 (probably before then you will see the window to choose the Pro or Home version). Here are the following options (important: starting from November 12th, if you have downloaded a new image or created a new USB lever, it will adapt):

  • If you purchased Windows 10, enter the product button, which is written on the OE Case -confirmation box.
  • If you have received Windows 10 as a free update on this computer and examined the update process, press «I don’t have a product button».
  • If your system meets the requirements for free update, but you have not done it and you have decided to make a clean installation, do not do it, take the installation. For activation after a clean installation, it is necessary to necessarily update the system on this computer with official Microsoft methods (important: starting from November 2015 it is possible to insert the key from Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, provided that the distribution has been downloaded from the Microsoft website after 12).
  • In the situation, in which you do not have a key and the other points above do not apply in your case, you can examine the product key (in the latest versions of the installation program using the button I do not have a product key). As a result, the system will be installed, but will not be activated.

The next step: read the license agreement and accept the license conditions. After doing it, press the «Next» button.

How to install Windows 10 on USB stick

One of the most important points – choose the type of Windows 10 installation. There are two options:

  • Update: in this case all settings, programs, files of the previously installed system will be maintained and the old system will be saved in the Windows.old folder. That is, this process is similar to a simple update.
  • Personalized installation: this point allows clean installation, without keeping (or partially storing) the user files and during the hard installation the disk can be partitioned, formatted, but at the same time the computer of the previous file. This method will also be described in this article.

How to install Windows 10 on USB stick

After choosing the personalized installation, you will reach the window for selection of the partition for installation (the possible errors at this stage are described below). If it is not a new hard drive, you will see more partitions than you saw first in Windows Explorer. I will try to explain.

How to install Windows 10 on USB stick

  • If the manufacturer has pre-installed windows, in addition to the system partitions (the number and sizes may vary), you will see another (usually) partition with a size of 10-20 GB. I do not recommend in one way or another to touch that partition, because it contains an image for the recovery of the system, which allows laptop or computer to restore the factory. In addition, it is not necessary to change the partitions reserved for the system (except in cases, when you decided to completely clean the hard drive).
  • As a rule, by performing a clean installation, the system is inserted in the partition corresponding to disk C, with its formatting (or cancellation). To do this, select this partition (it can be determined by size), press «format». And after, by selecting again, press the «Next» to continue installing Windows 10. The data on other partitions will not be interested. If until the installation of Windows 10 you had Windows 7 or XP, the recommended method is to delete that partition (not format it), select the partition relentlessly and press the «Next» button to automatically create the required partition.
  • If you go beyond formatting or elimination and choice of the partition for installation, on which the operating system is already installed, the previous operating system will be moved to the Windows.old folder and the file files will not be reached (the hard drive will be full of useless files).
  • If the main partition does not contain important information, it is possible to delete all partitions, then create the structure of the partitions (with the help of the «cancellation» and «new» points) and install on the first (main) partition, after the automatic creation of the partition for the system.
  • If the previous operating system is installed on the partition or disk C and for the installation of Windows 10 you will choose another partition or disk, as a result on the computer two operating systems will be installed with the choice for charging on the computer.

After selecting the option, press the «Next» button. The Windows files will start copying on your computer and after completing the computer it will restart. After restarting, if you see the pressure request for any key, do not do it – this time the system must be charged by the hard drive and not by the USB or DVD ASTichtt (if you have not changed this parameter in the BIOS).

After restarting for a while, actions will not be necessary, the «configuration of the component» will be prepared. At the same time, the computer can restart and sometimes view a black screen. Wait, it’s a normal process.

After completing these processes, you will see the suggestion of connecting to the wireless network (you can connect if you have wi-fi).

The next step: Setting the parameters. You can simply press «Use the fast settings» or the «Custom Settings» point, which allows the manual deactivation of some Windows 10 functions. I will not describe each function in this article. I recommend choosing the «personalized settings», read the description and, if something does not adapt to you, disable nothing bad will happen).

Then you will be asked to enter (create) the Microsoft account data or create a local computer account. If the Internet connection is not available, only the local account.

Subsequently, the last phase will begin: the configuration and installation of standard applications, the preparation of Windows 10 for the execution, the message «we prepare everything to be ready» on the screen. In fact, 30-40 minutes may be needed, especially on «weak» computers, it is not necessary to close or forcefully restart the computer right now.

And in the end you will see the Windows 10 screen: the system is installed correctly.

After installation

The first thing, which you have to do after a clean installation, is the installation of drivers. In fact, only Windows 10 will charge the necessary drivers if you are connected to the Internet. However, I recommend looking for and manually installing the necessary drivers:

  • For the laptop from the laptop manufacturer website, in the support section (support), for the laptop model. See: Where can I download a laptop driver.
  • For PC-From the site of the motherboard manufacturer.
  • For the video card, from the Nvidia or AMD (or even Intel) website, depending on the plate used. See: How to update the video card driver.

The second step recommended by me – After the successful installation of all drivers and the activation of the system, but up to the installation of programs, creating a Windows 10 restoration point, as in the future, in case of need, it is possible to bring the system to the initial state.
