Opera GX: the game browser in the test

With the Opera GX, the manufacturer of the Browser Opera developed the first game browser in the world all over the world. With its numerous functions, this is mainly aimed at players and is characterized by large adaptation options, unusual sound effects and integration of all types of practical additional components. We took a closer look at the GX opera in our test and we show if the use is really worth it.

1. User setting and interface

The download and installation of the GX opera do not differ significantly from those of a «conventional» browser. The whole process is performed as usual with the help of an installation assistant and has not even used 3 minutes on our Acer Nitro 5. However, note that the browser is configured by default so that telemetry data is sent to the work.

Immediately after the start, the browser greets us in the gaming neon design.

If you do not accept the standard settings, you can use the Burger menu at the top right, for example Change the colors of the buttons or select another background image for the main screen. Particularly interesting: If you have a suitable game hardware (eg taste or mice), you can make them shine according to the browser design.

In addition, Opera GX also brings its (inspired) sound effects that can be turned on and deactivated through the settings. These were created in collaboration with the Berlinist band and Sound Designer Rubén Street.

At first glance, the user interface seems very intuitive. All essential functions are available in the bar on the left and in the card menu. And the design could also convince us. It seems very consistent and should visually hit the nerve of the gambles community.

But the option is also very interesting for streamers, since the tools associated in the browser can also be limited and therefore do not paralyze the entire connection.

We have for our test on an Acer Nitro 5 «Fortnite – Battle Royale«Redied and limits to 50% (CPU), 8 GB (RAM) and 25 Mbit (network, on a fiber optic exit with 1 Gbit). This worked perfectly, the boundaries have never been overcome even in parallel downloads and the game worked without hitches and without impairments.

2.4. Contraction card

Another practical feature is also the Twitch card, which can be used to register directly with your account. The integration offers all the channels you have subscribed directly to GX opera and receive a notification directly via the web browser as soon as a new flow goes online. Search the profile image, it is therefore possible to directly reach the flow.

You can also solve videos from YouTube, Google and Twitch as a pop-out. These then remain open in a floating window above the cards and applications (in the foreground). The window can be enlarged and reduced and can be positioned on the screen at any time.

2.5. Integration of the messenger

The GX opera has already integrated some messengers, including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or Telegram (however, there is no discord, which is very popular among the players). The web versions of the Messenger program are generally available as an additional component for each browser, but obviously native support also has its advantages.

2.6. More features

Otherwise, the gaming browser offers all the comforts you already know from other work browsers. Including, for example, an AD block, a free VPN (unlimited) service for safe navigation and support for Chrome extensions and work.

3. Conclusion of our GX Test Opera

The GX work not only seems really elegant, but also offers many beautiful features that make players’ hearts faster faster. Of course, you could also create a game browser from a conventional browser with appropriate extensions. But why make the effort if you can get the entire package with the GX opera?

Although the GX opera is still at advance, it proved to be extremely rapid and very reliable in our test. A successful success browser that, thanks to the sophisticated functions, such as the integrated network limit, is not only suitable for players. However, since playing on the smartphone is becoming increasingly popular, we would also like a portable version of the browser for the future.
