Teirs 2 – elevating Done des Active Directory

After the successful installation of the W2K3 server with the standard specifications, we can now start and first set Active Directory, that is, we pass the server on the domain controller.

So that the information can be transferred, here the data I assigned during the installation:
Servirname: Testserver
IP address: 192.168.10.254/24
DNS-Domain: Mydomain.local
Netbios-Domini: Mydomain

To perform the following steps, the server must have an active network interface !!!
Therefore, connect the server network card to a hub/switch/router, otherwise the doctorate cannot be done to Washing DC.

First of all, we must assign a static IP address to the server, which obviously must combine the IP segment you use in your LAN; The information I chose must therefore be adapted accordingly.

To assign an IP address, proceed as follows:
Start => Control Control => Network connections => LAN Connection => Click Click => Select Properties. The following dialogue is displayed:

Select the item «Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)» and click on Property, then enter the values- consequently adapted to your environment:

The «standard» item always indicates the router, or your internet gateway. If it does not exist, leave this field empty.

Confirm all the dialogue with OK, so the allocation of a static IP address is complete.

Now the update process, also called a doctorate, there are two options: the first would be start => dcpromo => to enter, the second lead via the assistant configuration server, which can be accessed through start => administration => server configuration assistant. In the assistant, then choose «Add functions» and end up in this dialogue:

«Domain Controller (Active Directory)» and begins on «Next», just like DCpromo-The «Assistant to install Active Directory», whose welcome screen click with «Next», as well as the subsequent dialogue «Compatibility of the operating system».

In the next «type of domain controller» dialogue, your «domain controller for a new domain» chooses and confirm with «Next». The second point must be chosen if you already have a domain and you want to install another cc.

The next «Create new domain structure» dialogue expects only a selection if this DC is added to an existing domain or the first DC should be a new domain. The selection of the «domain structure in an existing general structure» serves to create different domains within large organizations – since we deal with a home network here, this is not an option.

The DC to be installed is the first DC for a new domain structure, so the first selection is the right one.

Click «Next» leads to the next dialogue «Install or configure DNS». Since we installed the server with standard specifications, no DNS Server service has still been installed. In order to correctly complete the promotion of the server for the DC, the Windows Server 2003 CD must be included in the unit, since the DNS server is now installed. As a result, the following selection is made: «No, install and configure DNS on this computer» and then click «Next».

Now it concerns the name DNS that your domain should receive. If you already have your domain on the Internet: please don’t take the name of your domain, but another or change the existing name! Instead of «maxmusterminn.de», it is better to take «maxmusternn.local»; This prevents DNS problems from occurring later.

Do not make the name too complicated, a similar name is sufficient for our scenario. Also confirms this input with «Next», we arrive at the «Netbios domain name» dialogue. This is the domain name that you will later see in the network environment, Windows suggests the first part of the name DNS Doma by default. It is possible to change the name, the Netbios and DNS names of the domain must not necessarily be the same, but in this case it is recommended. As a result, I assigned the name Mydomain for the domain.

A click on «Next» leads to the database and the protocol folders «. Here you can leave the default settings and click» Next «, since for a small domain there are no separate storage positions for databases and protocol folders. These settings are changed only if you create domains with several hundred or thousand users/objects.

The next «system volume released» dialogue suggests the C: Windows Sysvol for default and standard settings can also be easily adopted here. In this folder, the data to be answered are stored, which in turn plays only a role in different DCs or in different domains. Then click on «Next» and make the selection «only with the authorizations compatible with the operating systems of Windows 2000 or Windows 2003» in the «permits» dialog box.

This determines that further DC or domains must be performed at least on Windows 2000 or Server 2003, NT4 DCS or domains are not compatible. In principle, not very interesting for us, since we only have a DC – and is performed under Windows Server 2003. After clicking on «Next», the administrator password appears for directory services «for directory services. In the event that your DC must be defective and you must restore it from the backup, there is a special recovery mode (to reach [F8] With the start-up process)-for this it is this password, it has nothing to do with the password of the actual administrator you gave during the installation. Able, however, I would choose the same password here as for the administrator account, you can simply be kept better.

A new click on «Next» brings to the summary dialog box, all the information requested is provided and now should be checked for a short period. If everything is right, the server is updated to DC by clicking on «Next» and the Active Directory is installed.

After completing the doctorate, a restart is mandatory. If your server has been restarted, you will find when you register that another field has been added: in addition to the username and password, the «register» of the field is available (after clicking on «Options»). Only the Netbios name of your domain that you have included in the assistant appears here.

If customers are subsequently integrated into the domain, this field will also be available on customers. However, while customers therefore allow local registration, this is no longer possible in the DC, since it provides domain, only registration in the domain is possible.

What happened during the doctorate?
The DNS server and the corresponding DNS area for domain were installed, the directory database was created and archived in the previously specified folders and the server was built the primary administrative body for domain, that is, it contains all the Master functions (also called FSMO).
Under the administration it is now possible to find new items, for example «Active Directory user and computer» and some others, in the network environment the Netbios-Doman name should now appear and the server with its name assigned during the installation.

At best, the server should be provided with the latest patches/updates.

Before the clients can be added to the domain on the internet, part 3 describes the configuration of DNS, DHCP and wins and explains which settings must be carried out on customers in order to allow regular interaction between servers and customers to grant all computer access to the Internet etc.
